Oddly enough, I was thinking of how nice this would be just last night, as I contemplated replacing my current phone setup with a GNOME 3 tablet and headpiece (as I so rarely get calls, and tend to have a bag with me).

This will certainly lead to some intense experimentation. GNOME 3.2 is by far a phenomenal release of an already surprisingly good new version of the GNOME desktop. Be careful when you think things can't get better, because these guys will impress you.

This is so very awesome. You have no idea how excited I was when I read about this in the release notes a few days ago, and integrating with the addressbook to lookup phone numbers is just icing on the cake.

what about other programs that provide the ability to call or send sms? i've poked a little into that in order to get gnome-phone-manager to start dialing a cellphone[1], so that might hook into here as well.

how could we have a dispatch here? most appropriate thing that comes to my mind is to have programs open tel urls[2], and to dispatch that as we dispatch a default browser.

people dont like to read wizards the first time they launch the app, instead they just want to see the icons for the service they want to log in.

it has to be something easier like skype messenger, msn or ftalk: just place your login name and password.

Awesome. I was sure a bug report as rambling as mine was wouldn't lead to results in a long time... The resulting history window looks a lot better already -- although I'll reserve final judgment until I see searching in action: that is the real test. I also have some addiotional suggestions but no point in pushing those before actually testing the current State of the art...

Anyway, thanks to mpt, Emilio and other empathy developers. Empathy may sometimes make me want to rip my thinkpad in half, but it's still way better than the alternatives :) Keep up the good work.

lapo: the call window hasn't received any visual design yet - but then again it's targeted at 3.4 so I'm not too distressed by that. The focus right now is making sure it works and there's a *ton* more features to integrate as well. It's certainly a thing to work more in in the next cycle.

Rahul: yes, the telepathy-logger has a Pidgin backend which should fetch its logs as well.

Jonathan: I don't think there is such plugin for XChat; patch welcome. :)

Am I the only one having problem accessing gnome's bugzilla? Firefox and Chrome are both complaining about an expired certificate, and in firefox I can't override this.

The history window is overly complex in my opinion, the video call windows conceptually works, but I think it needs more work design wise, it's quite unpolished atm (while an improvement). Apart from the fact that the overlay is not so nice, what is going to happen when there is no video? Also the frame around the video windows should be removed, I'd avoid using the primary toolbar for writing info text, and there are several details which could be improved in general.

zekopeko, you’re right that the account menu should be centered and the “Search” field should be right-aligned.

You’re also right that by themselves, the “Show” and “Search” labels would make more sense above their controls than below. In a toolbar that contains labelled icon buttons, though, aesthetics make it a bit more important that any labels for menus and text fields are vertically aligned with labels for those buttons. They aren’t quite at the moment, but once they are, it will look much better.

The implemented log viewer isn't fully complaint with the mockup mpt provided.

1. The toolbar

It look like elements are left aligned. It isn't clear from the mockup but I think that the "Profile, Chat, Call, Video" buttons should be left aligned, the "Show All account" should be center aligned (probably with the What field), "Search" box should be right aligned.

IMO the "Show" and "Search word should be above the widgets not below them. Makes more sense to "Show" All account instead of All account "Show". Same applies to search.

2. The scrollbars on the Who, What and When columns should not cover them. In the mockup they start below them (examine the mockup).

Suggestion: Since you have a limited, fixed number of entries in the What box I suggest the default size of it be just enough to show all list items in the What list box.

3. The top entry in the Who, What, When lists is Anything. In the mockup it is clearly separated by extra spacing and dotted line.

I hope you fix those issues. I'm glad that we finally are getting some design driven UI in Gnome but it is important that coders implement them as per the specification. Remember that a desinger probably thought it through far more than the coder did.

Looks like you used rsvg to render the icon. It renders blurs with some offset in some cases, sadly exposed here on the outline of the bubble and below. This is the correct rendering:

For some non-english locales (like french, but not only), it's just too large because of the menu...

Florin: this is because of Ubuntu specific changes; that's not an upstream patch.

Barrosc: The "disable log" option should probably be added in 2.31 (see bug #567858). Not sure how invisible work with MSN but that's probably a telepathy-butterfly issue.

Marco: actually I'm considering to remove the info bar once the account has been reconnected.

For me, it lacks only that for a perfect IM client: - Support of proxy. - Support of encryption and signature with GPG and a simple possibility to send public kay to contact. - Possibility to connect to an IRC chat room without account and support of xdcc.

I've been using the new empathy in Lucid, and I must say: it rocks! :-) thanks for all the hard work.

I just have one suggestion, with regards to the error interface: instead of reporting network errors in red on the top dialog, wouldn't it be better to have small icons at the bottom for each account (sort of like a toolbar, but in a status bar position), with red or green? the icons would go red when there are network errors, and green when one is connected.

What I'm finding at the moment is, I leave empathy running for a couple of days, and then its full of network errors - I need to click on the X for each of them. Almost always I find that I'm connected on each account, so I don't really care if there were errors in the past.

If you think this is a good idea, I can raise the bug report - is this on the gnome bugzilla?

Can you put a "NO LOG MY CHATS option" or something like this? this is very important to privacy.

It is possible to get the "INVISIBLE" state as pidgin does whit the MSN messenger account?

Does it still work really hard to hide the new messages from the user?

I tried it, and gave up quickly. It was very hard to notice new messages. The notifications were so "suave" I missed them 9 out of 10. People thought I was ignoring them on purpose. Horrible UI design.

Went back to Pidgin, and it's a bit better but not much. Something has changed, either in the window manager, or something else, and I can't configure it to pop up new messages right in the middle of the screen, on top of everything else - instead, they always show up minimized.

Any "feature" that can't be turned off is a bug. :(

Tom: Both icons provide valuable information. The status is usefull to know which accounts are connected or not and the status icon is helpful to quickly spot the kind of account. We plan to re-add a quick enable/disable option at some point.

ethana2: not the GNOME one. But you can add you in the CC list of the bug, that's a good indicator of the number of people interested in it.

Ari: Not atm. See bug #586562

Hebert: FileTransfer in MSN should arrive very soon (it's basically done). Don't know for blocking.

The latest empathy is great, really. Thanks a lot for all of this great work!

However, UI-wise, there are are lot of "wtf" moments if I just look at the screenshots. Two rows of icons in the accounts dialog? Seriously? Come one, this looks silly and there is not even a way to quickly enable/disable accounts (like pidgin allows and empathy used to allow!!)

Why should users have to care? People use web and email clients every day without having to worry about HTTP, POP, STMP, IMAP, etc.

The underlying protocol is an implementation detail for users. There is no point to confuse them about that.

Xav: I thought about that but think it's not that useful as the old (Haze) FB plugin wasn't easily accessible to users. You had to delete Haze's manager file and I assume that people who were able to do that can recreate their account. :)

Eric: It's not working atm because of FB limitations. I don't know what their plans are. Tbh, I don't think we should map Empathy's status with your FB one; but maybe FB could have a XMPP extension for that at some point?

clee: It's not a bad idea actually. Care to submit a patch? ;)

Petteri, mp: Most users don't know about XMPP and don't care either. I'd rather not confuse them with a weird acronym. Furtermore, as Rob said, strictly speaking this is not really a XMPP network.

Serge: I guess Facebook people are the ones to ask about that :\

Raph: We could imagine hardcoding a special group in Empathy for those (as we do for Salut accounts appearing in a "People Nearby" group). But, tbh, I'd prefer to see that fixed by using meta-contacts, but that's a longer term goal.

It's a shame that you can't move those facebook contacts to a specific group, because they all appear as toplevel contacts and it gets messy real fast if you have more than 20 friends online.

ethana2, Olivier: They're not /blocking/ anything, the reality is that Facebook chat system is not actually an XMPP network - this is just a gateway onto their servers which allows XMPP clients to connect. This means you can't send the full generality of XMPP requests, like rich presence, capabilities discovery, or the types of XML messages used for file transfer and calling - because these kind of messages aren't (currently) representable or transmittable over their internal chat server network. That's not to say it will /never/ work - they can pick these up and move them between two XMPP clients if they wanted - but it won't at the moment. @ethana2, we tried but is not possible as Facebook seems to be blocking some of he trafic. In the same maner you can't have any presence other than online and offline and no presence message.

If you've only recently added a username (www.facebook.com/whatever) to your Facebook account, it seems you need to log out of the website, log back in, *then* connect with Empathy; until you do that, you'll get "Authentication Error".

Can't file a bug report right now, but have you noticed, that when going on and off in MUCs, the contact/user-list disappears?

vinagre/vinagre-tube-handler.c 519: GTK_BUTTONS_OK_CANCEL, _("%s wants to share his desktop with you."),

Do you have a better wording? Maybe this:

"%s wants to share his/her desktop with you."

Note that the problem is specific to English.

Beeing interested I skipped through the announcements and found a note for mc5 that while migrating from mc4 all your passwords will be exported from gnome-keyring and saved in plaintext - could someone confirm and comment on this?!

But Firefox seems absolutely broken when I want to assign custom handler to some nonexisten protocol (like adiumxtra://). Spent 20 minutes trying to install it :(

Forgot to add: I also have to temporarily block some individuals on my contact list if I want to avoid some drama queen moments. ;)

It's a feature that is expected in most IM clients, so I understand why there are some annoyed users in the Ubuntu forums.

Personally I regularly get unwanted messages from people not on my contact list and for that reason I still use other IM clients. Quite annoying spam.

Looks like it's also a regression for Ubuntu users who need to start pidgin to block contacts, despite Empathy being the default. There's a ruckus about that in the forums of karmic:

@Max: open protocols have always been and stay our priority; Empathy suports audio/video with XMPP and SIP since a while. But by implementing this kind of feature, you can convince people to switch to free software and start to use open protocols. Some people can't stop to use MSN directly; mostly for social reasons.

@Bob: mostly because the Skype protocol hasn't be completely reverse engineered and nobody is working on it atm. :)

@Nick: I don't know. I discussed this a bit with Ubuntu people and they weren't sure. Any way, package should reach the PPA soon.

Please *don't* support the insecure OTR encryption. It has various known security and authentication problems. (At one point the OTR site had a note on it explaining one of those known problems, but that note no longer seems to exist on the OTR site.)

A GPG-based signing and encryption mechanism would rock though.

Mats: We don't have to deal about NAT/Firewall in Salut as all peers are suppose to be on the same network. We'll have this problem in Gabble thought. Our plan is to implement nat penetration, as well for FT and tubes, using libnice.

Nice! I'm really interested in it's performance, and how it deals with NAT, firewalls etc.

I recall reading about something(api/framework) that would deal with this (NAT, firewalls etc.) automatically, for Telepathy/Empathy. This would be very handy for file transfers, but also for (support via) remote desktop, games, collaborating in e.g inkscape, gedit.

I'm using a mac mini which has the Core 2 Duo Mobile CPU, I'm guessing it's about as quiet as you can get within that performance range without going to extremes. It is not cheap though and it has Intel graphics (not sure how much video card affects video playback). The problem is, even after upgrading my mini to Core 2 Duo 2.16 GHz I can't play 720p (mkv h264) content in Elisa. Totem plays it much better and mplayer handles it fine. If you look around you will hear wildly different claims of what hardware you need, I'm guessing this is because poeple have different views of what is acceptable plus there is a difference between the software decoder you use. On my system Elisa plays 720p mostly fine but drops frames during panning scenes. If your'e aiming for full HD at 1080p then you'll probably need the best cpu you can get.

When/if the ffmpeg decoder for h264 gets better this might change. The best decoder currently is the proprietary coreavc that I think can be used from mplayer with some hackery but not in gstreamer yet.

elisa is quite resource-hungry, I am afraid. I am using a fanless system in my living room for a while already. The VIA C3 CPU at 600 MHz has been powerful enough to handle any audio and video I threw at it so far. But even with a powerful graphics card added to this system, elisa is still far from usable.

Dont make a mistake. Please dont do it like xchat-gnome. Interface is terrible.

better take a look at konversation UI. It looks realy usable and like a macos colloquy client which interface is perfect. I recommend to take a look at http://colloquy.info/screenshots.ht... xchat-gnome treeview room list is terrible. Use the gtknotebook like its done in pidgin and konversation.

I think a application dedicated to jabber muc room woud be a great idea, or at least, a client as good as a regular irc client, one without the "roster part" of usual jabber client.

And to respond to papyou, I personnaly prefer to use irssi because it can be embedded in screen, because it scale better for a "heavy" usage of irc ( like being on lot of channel, ) and because of Alt + A, keyboard shortcut to go on a channel where there is "activity".

Lots of people use xchat too, and also lots of people use mirc.

Conduit does actually have some work put into it to make it run on Maemo. I'm pretty sure it's not packaged anywhere yet, and may actually not be complete (I know it was being developed in a Chinook scratchbox and not the device itself), but if you poke around Conduit's site enough, you might be able to find the info to build it yourself... Thank you. I just stumble upon this post: i've been using the jamendo plugin for a about a week now.

I'm very excited: i didn't know about jamendo and i've been playing with it a lot. I also found lots of nice music. There are some great artists there. And its very easy to use and find new music.

Things that could be improved: - the album art works when using jamendo, but when you download the music the album art is not always shown (although this is not due to your plugin) - can you download the .torrent file directly and open it with the default torrent-client? Instead of using a webbrowser just to fetch a .torrent file (a wget in the background would suffice) - a button that opens the album and/or artist page?

PS. finderflu: you can find packages for edgy at http://getdeb.net they have a backport available for edgy, perhaps even dapper..

je ne suis pas d'accord, certains groupes comme été 67 étaient décevants par rapport à d'habitude. En plus c'était une salle avec une ultra mauvaise aération, on étouffait dans les cendres de cigarettes et on ne savait pas s'assoir d'où un abominable mal de dos à cause de la réverbération des basses pendant 10H de concert non stop!!! a prévoir si un jour vous y allez un chaise pliante et un masque à gaz! ; )

Par contre je vous recommande le Rips en Bips (ortho??) à Mons expo, ça c'est génial . Même groupes en gros ( rock belge) et quand on a pas envie d'écouter certains concerts, on a un immense espace pour s'assoir, boire ou manger des trucs. Il y a aussi plein d'associations humanitaires qui sont là. et qui proposent des activités....

The Tellers est un groupe de Braine-l'Alleud. Mon frère les connait. Pour l'instant ils n'ont sorti qu'un EP mais ils travaillent sur un album. Ils ont été repérés par 62 records après avoir gagné un "pure demo". Normalement on peut même trouver leur EP à la médiathèque. Ou alors, si tu veux aider un jeune groupe, je crois qu'il est à €9 (pas trop cher) si je passe par mon frère. Je sais pas si on peut le trouver à la FNAC vu que c'est pas (encore) très connu.

Les collectes ULB c'est tout les 3 mois, parfois moins mais c'est pas toujours à la plaine. Il y a moyen de demander un calendrier lors des collectes et si tu as deja fait une donation ils t'avertissent par courrier (non Cass il y a pas d'ICS)

Heu ouais au CI, il est très facile de tomber sur des gros lourds. J'imagine la scène si tu es tombé au téléphone sur Colruyt ... Toutefois il ne s'agit nullement ici d'une initiative du CI donc ça ne devrait pas empècher le BEP de soutenir.

Salut, Concernant le BEP, il n'a pas été question qu'il s'y implique ... Il y a du avoir un malentendu ;-) On aurait bien voulu se joindre à vous, mais, et sans être égoïste, on préfère ne pas le faire. Car chez nous le port 2401 in/out est bien ouvert et surtout, on n'a plus du tout envie de faire preuve d'une quelconque solidarité envers le CI car ils en ont totalement manqué envers nous (via téléphone et forum) et ce, d'une facon inqualifiablement malpolie (à part Bigon, merci à lui de son aide d'ailleurs). Ce qui n'empèche pas l'engagement personnel de Cédric je pense ;-)

Remarque quand au vol de vélo: il faudrait que les gens respectent la propriété d'autrui, et pour cela il serait souhaitable que la majorité politique régnant (c'est le mot) en Wallonie cesse d'encourager le parasitage en faisant croire à la masse de ses électeurs que tout leur est dû, à commencer par les allocations de chômage sans chercher le moindre travail. J'ai été trrès dédçu par "la possibilité..." Les personnages ne sont pas convainquants, leur sexualité très puérile. Il y a trop d'accent sur la fellation en tant que passe-temps. Les monologues du Savant et des clones Daniel -- du charabia pseudo-scientifique. En général -- Un BD litteraire qui ne mérite pas un prix.

Le tout n'est pas de virer les bagnoles du jour au lendemain, cela doit, bien évidemment, s'accompagner d'un véritable changement dans la société et les mentalités. Je rêve d'un monde où les transports en communs seraient assez bien développés que pour rendre l'usage de la voiture optionnel, d'un monde où les bus arrivent à l'heure (bien qu'avec la disparition des voitures et de la circulation qui va avec ça devrait encore être de l'ordre du possible), d'un monde où on peut laisser son nouveau vélo à la gare sans craindre de se le faire piquer, etc Bref, d'un autre monde comme disait l'autre.

Une société sans voitures, un rêve ... où les campagnes ne seraient peuplées que de fermiers, et où tous ceux qui doivent travailler en ville seraient obligés d'y loger, avec pour conséquence que le droit au logement, déjà horriblement onéreux, ne serait plus accessible qu'aux plus fortunés. Un rêve donc, mais un rêve de luxe !!
